Bravo Brio

For me there is something comforting about Italian food, but due to the somewhat unhealthy nature of pasta I try not to eat it too often. Brio is an authentic Italian restaurant and this was a special occasion, so I made an exception and went for broke. It started with a sampling of bruschetta that included steak, roasted red pepper, caprese, and antipasta options. The crunch of the toasted bread added a necessary textural element, but each one was yummy.
For my entree, I went for a Mediterranean pasta dish. It had sun dried tomato, mushrooms, spinach, Feta cheese, caramelized onions and pine nuts in a light sauce. The onions added a touch of sweetness, the pine nuts added a bit of crunch, and the other ingredients made the dish multidimensional. The dish wasn't heavy which made it easier to not feel super guilty after eating it.
Of course, I had to end this special dish with dessert. Since tiramisu is one of my favorites, I try to order it in order to compare. I am still on the hunt for the most delicious tiramisu, but I have a few that top the list. This one wasn't my favorite because it was a bit on the heavy side and super rich, but it was fairly decent. Brio is a great place for a special dinner and great food. If you haven't stopped by, be sure to do so soon.

Grotto is a Go

I had no idea the difference between Italian food from Italy and American Italian food. Italy uses super fresh ingredients, light sauces, and handmade pastas, which is not exactly the way they do it here. I found that it took me a while to want to go out for Italian because I didn't want to be disappointed, but then I found Grotto. Located by the Galleria, this gem is one of a few places that I have found that serve real Italian style food. They are less about drenching the pasta in sauce and more about highlighting each flavor to create a party in your mouth. To start they have this herbed olive oil with basil and crushed red pepper in it and it's served with plain sourdough bread and these cheese and herb "tortilla" strips. I am not exactly sure what it is, but it is something between a tortilla and a pita. All I know is that it's delicious and was gone in seconds. Since the temperature is rising, I chose a pasta with tomatoes, chicken, and mozzarella. There were roma, sundried, and regular tomatoes and for not loving tomatoes, I do have to say I am quit a fan of sundried tomatoes. The chicken was moist and tender and the fresh note of the basil was a great flavor boost. There wasn't too much sauce; it had just a touch of marina sauce so the pasta wasn't dry. I decided to pair my pasta dish with a Kenwood Yulupa Chardonnay. It was buttery and had a hint of oakiness to it, that lingered for a minute on your tongue. It was a perfect beverage for a delicious pasta dinner! If you haven't been to Grotto, I suggested you make it a point to try it because you won't be disappointed.

Welcome Home!

Nothing says 'Welcome Home' like a home cooked meal and that's exactly what I got from my mom. Lasagna rolls, salad, and three cheese bread. So it wasn't low-cal or fat free, but that's not a priority when you go home. Besides everything tastes better with the real thing. For good measure, I got a leafy green salad with lots of veggies to make up for the cheese and pasta. Next, was lasagna rolls with ricotta, spinach, and meat, lightly topped with marina and melted, golden brown cheese. This was very filling, but surprisingly didn't make me feel so full that I couldn't function. The touch of tomato sauce allowed each of the filling flavors to shine without being overwhelmed with a tomato taste. The cheese acted like the perfect glue to keep everything together so that each bite had a bit of pasta and filling. Sometimes with lasagna, the filling squirts out and you are forced to eat either the pasta or the filling. Fortunately, I didn't have to choose because I could have both!

An Italian themed meal would not be complete without a side of bread. Let me say this one is worth the calories. This three cheese semolina from La Brea Bakery had a light and airy texture with a crust that crackled perfectly. It was definitely not limp or tasteless. It was everything that you would want in a piece of bread. Just talking about this dinner makes me want to have it all over again. However, I think that might not necessarily be so good for me and it makes it special when I do get to have meals like this on special occasions. Since the lasagna rolls will be hard for you to get your hands on since they don't ship very well, you can keep your eyes out for the delicious La Brea Bakery bread. They have a variety of flavors, and though I can only vouch for this one, but I am sure that you won't make a wrong choice.
