Boone Hall Plantation

Going to South Carolina and not visiting a plantation is like to going to New York City and not going to see the Empire State Building...just something that you have to do (or maybe that's just my opinion). In any case, we did go visit Boone Hall Plantation. This is located right outside downtown Charleston and is one of the oldest working plantations in America. It is been in existence for more than three centuries. As you drive up to the house, you take a step back in time by driving through a grove of Oak trees that are more than 200 years old. They are gorgeous and draped with Spanish moss, a beautiful scene of how nature can stand the test of time. The house itself was rebuilt three times due to time and natural disasters. However you can still walk through the original slave quarters and take a tour of the grounds that are still being used today. This plantation was integral to the creation of Charleston, as one of the owners were a set of brothers who built most of downtown Charleston with bricks made at Boone Hall. Laced with history, this plantation has also been a part of pop culture. One of the fun facts we learned on the tour was that the infamous lake scene in The Notebook as filmed at a pond at Boone Hall. It has also been used in many other films and TV series. I don't want to give everything away so be sure that you put this historical place on your sightseeing list.
